World in Focus – Elections in Argentina and Repercussions in Mercosul

On October 29, 2023, the “World in Focus” event brought together experts and stakeholders for an in-depth analysis of Argentina’s recent primary elections and their potential implications for the regional landscape of Mercosur. The event featured the distinguished participation of Laura Velasquez, an influential international figure and renowned specialist in political and economic affairs.

Laura Velasquez, IBREI’s International Representative in Argentina, Executive Coordinator of Convergência Empresarial Mulheres do Mercosul, and President of FEPESNA – the Foundation for Political, Economic, and Social Studies for the New Argentina, delivered a comprehensive analysis of the economic and geopolitical perspectives associated with each Argentine presidential candidate’s government proposal.

Her extensive experience—including her tenure as Director of the Unit for the Promotion and Support of Exporting Entrepreneurs, as well as her role as President of the Foundation of the Bank of the City of Buenos Aires—provides her with a unique insight into the region’s political and economic dynamics.

During the event, Velasquez carefully examined Argentina’s recent primary elections, exploring the key factors that shaped the electoral landscape. Her analysis enabled participants to better understand the nuances of the candidates’ proposals, offering a clear perspective on how different policy approaches could impact not only Argentina’s economy and geopolitics, but also Mercosur as a whole.

Beyond the electoral analysis, Velasquez addressed other highly relevant issues. One topic discussed was the potential entry of Argentina into the BRICS bloc—an outlook that could redefine regional alliances and dynamics. Another critical point was the matter of financial transactions between Brazil and Argentina conducted in Chinese currency, reflecting China’s growing economic influence in the region.

The event was a true masterclass in economics and geopolitics. Be sure to explore the full content through the link below.
